For evil to triumph, it is only necessary for good men to do nothing.
- Edmund Burke
Someone said to Voltaire, "Life is hard." Voltaire replied, "Compared to what?"
When facts become bigotry, we are all in trouble.
- Chandler Burr, The Atlantic Monthly, October 1997
It's cool to have all the resources in the world and pretend that you're disadvantaged.
- Syl Jones, Minneapolis Star Tribune, August 15, 1997
Of course, the perfume and passion of romance novels have been around for a long time. The new ingredient is feminism, which has added intellectual heft and political respectability to affairs, provided they are carried on by women. An extramarital fling offers a rebellion against cookie dough and carpools. It offers what is euphemistically called freedom. While most of us still interpret male infidelity as a threat to the family, female infidelity has become a titillating form of self-expression.
- Katie Roiphe, New York Times magazine, October 12, 1997
Spam most surely does NOT exist in the postal environment. The fliers from the grocery store aren't spam. If postal junk mail were spam, you'd be getting all the same type of crap you get via e-mail in your postal mailboxes every day. Thankfully, this doesn't happen! The reason is simple: It costs money to send those things through postal mail. And even at bulk rate, it isn't an insignificant cost. Spam, on the other hand, is, relatively speaking, FREE. And that's the problem.

I say to heck with Janet Reno.
- Steve Ballmer, Executive Vice President, Microsoft
A nation can rise no higher than its women. We focus on women but cannot lose sight that we must rise as a family. Men, women and children.
- Khadijah Farrakhan, wife of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan
Sex discrimination in (college) admissions is a non-issue today.
- Wendy Kaminer, Chicago Tribune, October 12, 1997
When, in the names of freedom and feminism, young women listen less to the hard-earned wisdom of older women about how to pick Mr. Right, they listen even more to their hormones. This allows cruder measures of a man's worth -- like the size of his muscles -- to return to prominence. The result is not a feminist utopia, but a society in which genetically gifted guys can more easily get away with acting like Mr. Wrong.
- Steve Sailer, National Review, Is Love Colorblind?
The message in When Work Doesn't Work Anymore can be compared to feminists' complaints about the military and Lani Guinier's message about law school: Too aggressive, needs feminizing. Since women can't hack it in certain environments, it's the environments that need to change. Let's have fewer pushups, lighter hand grenades, and more sensitivity training, and let's do away with that useless Socratic method.
- Diana Furchtgott-Roth, Intellectual Capital
Verbal and emotional abuse: While these do not leave telltale scars and bruises, their damage can be greater than physical abuse. Constant criticism, degrading remarks, name calling, accusations and threats erode self-esteem. They create anger, uncertainty and sometimes hatred.
- Lynn Johnson, The Mining Company, Cycle of Violence
If the child care debate is about what the government must do for working mothers, this means that women can pursue their new roles outside the family only if Big Brother steps in to pick up the slack. For millions of Americans, that's not a liberating message.
- Cathy Young, Detroit News, October 28, 1997
You cannot have a system that is half totalitarian and half free. It will not survive.
- House Speaker Newt Gingrich
