Of course, the perfume and passion of romance novels have been around for a long time. The new ingredient is feminism, which has added intellectual heft and political respectability to affairs, provided they are carried on by women. While most of us still interpret male infidelity as a threat to the family, female infidelity has become a titillating form of self-expression.

If postal junk mail were spam, you'd be getting all the same type of crap you get via e-mail in your postal mailboxes every day. Thankfully, this doesn't happen! The message in When Work Doesn't Work Anymore can be compared to feminists' complaints about the military and Lani Guinier's message about law school: Too aggressive, needs feminizing. Since women can't hack it in certain environments, it's the environments that need to change. Let's have fewer pushups, lighter hand grenades, and more sensitivity training, and let's do away with that useless Socratic method.

Verbal and emotional abuse: While these do not leave telltale scars and bruises, their damage can be greater than physical abuse. Constant criticism, degrading remarks, name calling, accusations and threats erode self-esteem. They create anger, uncertainty and sometimes hatred.

If the child care debate is about what the government must do for working mothers, this means that women can pursue their new roles outside the family only if Big Brother steps in to pick up the slack. For millions of Americans, that's not a liberating message.

You cannot have a system that is half totalitarian and half free. It will not survive.
