I have answered the ALL Dads phone lines (608) 255-3237 on and off over 5 years, and have exclusively provided this volunteer service for the past 13 months. Over the years, a change has taken place.
Five years ago, it was an oddity to have a woman call our hotline. Today, about one third of all calls that come in are from second wives. These second wives are some of our angriest callers.
They are angry at the suffering their present husband experiences because he is denied access to his children. They are angry because the courts treat their family and children as not having the same rights to the economic benefits as the children of the first wife.
They become furious when the courts declare that their husband has the same "potential income" after he has been laid off from a company that has downsized, as before. They see the courts essentially stealing the bread out of their children's mouths while not considering the income of the ex-wife or her new husband. These second wives are furious when the courts attempt to indirectly get at their income using the logic that the husband's expenses are now lower since he is married to a working spouse.
The laws will change since these second wives are self-righteous and will not tolerate this injustice to their children, her husband, and herself. Child support laws will change because second wives are not afraid to confront injustice. They are not off balance from the humiliating effect of the accusation of "Deadbeat Dad."
This is one of the significant lessons I have learned in 1994 listening to one thousand callers.
