In this column I pose questions and raise issues. I don't always agree with the conclusion, implied or stated. The purpose is to put a slightly different spin on each item and to promote discussion.
- People from other countries come to America of their own accord seeking freedom and opportunity, wide open spaces, abundant food, spacious homes, and a government ready to bully its citizens on behalf of the immigrants. Nothing wrong with immigrants - both my grandfathers came from other countries. But my grandfathers came to this land expecting to learn our language, live by our laws and work for a living.
- At the rate female teachers are being charged with sex crimes, soon all classes will have to be taught by computers.
- Feminists frequently complain our site is unbalanced and should have more articles about women's issues. So we could be "balanced" like the National Organization for Women? Oh, wait, the pop feminist "pro-equality" sites are all one-sided. Demonstrating that the pop feminist definition of equality is, "women, first."
- Hawaii has one of the most readily available heat energy sources in the world, and nobody is using it.
- Anthropologists are to Indian tribes what lawyers are to the mainstream - you need 'em, but you don't want 'em. So, just as folks in the mainstream make disparaging remarks about lawyers that are not always true, the mud Indian communities fling in the general direction of anthropologists doesn't always hit their mark, either. Like the complaint that anthropologists would never desecrate the dead of their own culture the way they treat the dead of indigenous cultures. Anthropologists are in the business of digging up the dead. They desecrate every cultures' graves.
- If the American government had bombed the bulge at Mt. Saint Helens a few days before it blew up on its own, would the devastation have been more, or less?
- In my experience, when people call customer service (doesn't matter what company), they expect the customer service rep to have the expert knowledge of a college professor, the humility of a saint, the authority of an executive, the understanding of the law of a Supreme Court justice and the patience of a horse whisperer. And they expect this of a person who is making between $10 and $14 per hour. Now here's the joke: employers expect the same thing.
- Why do those little drive-in oil change places always put in too much oil? They're the professionals, shouldn't they know that too much oil makes engines leak? Or is that the whole point?
- Don't put off until tomorrow what you can delay today.
- Many oppose unions because in their heyday they were corrupt and, with few exceptions, are probably just as corrupt today. While this is a good point, a corrupt union is better than no union because, absent strong unions, corporate managers run roughshod over the rank and file. For example, by giving themselves big bonuses and hefty raises while driving down wages (hidden by inflation) for everybody else. Which is precisely what has happened during the past 20 years.
- Why do we carry so many headlines about women committing crimes? Because pop feminists have perpetrated the myth that few women do such things.
- "Dressing down" in an office environment is becoming a mark of high status, with lower status employees having to dress up.
- A "service economy" does not produce wealth. Otherwise, mainland China would be the wealthiest nation on the planet. Wealth is the creation of stuff, and American corporations have been moving the means to create wealth - manufacturing - overseas as fast as they can. Unless we put a stop to this, soon most Americans will be little more than servants.
- What's sexist about pointing out the mainstream media's anti-male bias?
- Naysayers are irrelevant. All they do is tell you why you can't do something. Were it up to them, we'd still be walking naked and afraid on the primordial plains.
- Asperger syndrome, also known as Asperger disorder, is not considered a disability in Silicon Valley.
- Having Asperger syndrome is like playing in a game where everybody but you knows the rules, and when you ask, "Will somebody please tell me what the rules are?" managers reply, "Sure, rule number 1, you don't work here anymore," club owners say, "Sure, rule number 1, you're not a member here anymore," and acquaintances nod and say, "Gotta go, talk to you later."
- What do you do in the event of a Tsunami? Run like hell is the usual answer. But public buildings have fall out shelters, why not water tight impact shelters, too?
- According to Microsoft, people working together and freely sharing is un-American.
- Where is the sense in condemning somebody for an error made in ignorance?
- Who commits the greater sin, the thief or the lecher, the aristocratic deceiver or the self-made storyteller, Bush or Clinton?
- Many feel a Republican administration improves the moral character of the nation because of their conservative attitudes toward sex and drugs. Like that made any difference during the 1980s administrations of Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr., when cocaine was the drug of choice, one-night stands were common, and the prevalence of teen pregnancies and single mom households was on the rise.
- The USSR was a corporation writ large.
- Years ago I read a report that the family of actor Hugh Beaumont was deeply dismayed by the number of people who visit the grave of the man who played Ward Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver. What these people demonstrate, however, is the deep longing Americans feel for a return to the father figure of the fifties.
- Like Indiana Jones, Laura Croft desecrates the dead and steals the treasures of indigenous cultures.
- In our frenzied victim-culture a concept our "Christian" society has lost is redemption. If anybody who is not a member of one of the designated victim groups cannot redeem themselves no matter what they do, then there is no reason for them or any other offender to even try.
- For years, feminists took their case for equality to TV and radio talk shows. Gradually, they were replaced by anti male bigots. Equalitarians responded by confronting them with facts and exposing their lies and bigotry. The misandrists (man haters) responded by replacing public dialog with public protests.
- Many educators want us to believe children who do not have computers in public education are being deprived of learning essential employment skills. But while computers in the school library might be valuable research aids, as any adult who uses a computer at work knows, if you know how to type, you need only a few weeks to become proficient with a computer. But computers in the classroom do teach children to be sedentary, something they can't pick up in a few weeks.
