The Backlash! - October 1996
Things that make you go, "hmmm"
In this column, we pose a few questions and raise some issues. The purpose is to
put a slightly different spin on each than you may have seen before, and to promote
discussion. In fact, as you read this column, you may even decide you want to
write an article about one of them for The Backlash!
- If a bear in the woods attacks and chases you, you don’t forgive the bear --
there’s nothing to forgive. The bear was just being a bear. But you never forget,
and you do avoid the bear. Emotionally abusive women are like the bear. Can’t
blame them for being what they are, just stay away from them.
- If women expect men to share male power, then women must share female
power with men.
- Few black women in positions of power will talk about the plight of black
men.
- Is MacKinnonism the new McCarthyism?
- In 25 years, only the faces of power have changed.
- Pop feminists complain that women have to work twice as hard for half the
recognition. Twenty five years ago, that may have been true, but at least the white
men in charge gave jobs (that paid a living wage) to anyone who was willing to
work twice as hard for half the recognition. Now, with increasing frequency
women are in charge, and if you're the wrong color, the wrong sex, or live on the
wrong side of the ideological tracks, they won't hire you no matter how good you
are. (And pundits wonder why buildings and airplanes are getting blown up?)
- Men will express their feelings of insecurity when women stop swooning
over men who don't.
- When women abandon their traditional roles, pop feminists and the media
call them liberated; when men abandon their traditional roles, pop feminists and the
media call them "deadbeats."
- Pop feminists say "the personal is political." But when it's men, pop feminists
advocate policies indicating they believe men's experiences don't count. That is,
"the (male) personal is irrelevant."
- According to Dr. V.W. Pinn, Director of the Office of Research on Women's
Health, 85 percent of the NIH Research Budget funds basic science, 10 percent is
allocated to women's health, and a measly 5 percent goes to men's health.
- What do you get when you put the letter "W" in front of the word, omen?
Think about it.
- Talking with women about sex is like going to a restaurant where one person
has already eaten.
- When women sleep with, marry and support poor and powerless men, men
will stop competing for money and power.
- "In the younger age groups single men have ... less than half as much sexual
activity as single females." -- George Gilder, Men and Marriage
- Nymphomaniac: A woman with a man's sexual neediness.
- If black women are doubly oppressed because they are black and female,
then why do they fare so much better than black men?
- Pop feminists feel threatened by the idea of an artificial womb.
- If marriage oppresses women, then why does it give them title to men's
property and earning power even if it ends in divorce?
- If men should be required to pay their ex-wives financial alimony to make up
for lost income, shouldn't women be required to provide sexual alimony to make
up for lost sexual services?
- The Battered Woman Syndrome is a the-devil-made-me-do-it defense.
- Pop feminists say women are afflicted by a false consciousness. So, who says
the pop feminists are not similarly deluded?
- Post-menopausal Germaine Greer complains of too little male attention, and
she's considered a leading feminist writer. So, what does that make men who
complain of too little female attention?
- We can't stay away from this person: Twenty years ago, Greer complained
that she was oppressed by too much attention from men, now she complains that
she is oppressed by too little. What does this prove? There is a God.
- If Bill Gates was a woman, how many people would not buy his
software?
