The Backlash! - August 1996
Things that make you go, "hmmm"
In this column, we pose a few questions and raise some issues. The purpose is to
put a slightly different spin on each than you may have seen before, and to promote
discussion. In fact, as you read this column, you may even decide you want to
write an article about one of them for The Backlash!
- Everyone thinks we have freedom of speech (expression) in the United
States. In reality, this is only a political right which the government, but not
employers, must observe. If an employer disagrees with what we say on our own
time, they can fire or refuse to hire us, and, under the law, there is little we can do
about it.
- Oppressive monopolies dominate where competition is discouraged.
- Roughly half the states in America are "hire at will, fire at will" states. That
is, except for federally "protected categories," like race, sex and religion, unless
you’re under contract or protected by a union, they can fire you for just about any
reason they want.
- If we need to spend half our life on education and training, we should not
have to starve or work ourselves to exhaustion to do it.
- If multinational corporations are not going to support America, why should
Americans support them?
- Detractors say the web is little more than a fad, the "next big thing." Once
upon a time AT&T executives said the cellular phone would not appeal to a large
market, too.
