Beast Movie Review
By Rod Van Mechelen
2023 Olympia, WA -- I thoroughly enjoyed Idris Elba in Luther, and both he and Sharlto Copley are good actors who deliver good performances, but this movie is every man's nightmare.
Doctor Dad and his two typically self-obsessed, dad-hating American teen age daughters go to Africa, where Game Warden Friend takes them out in his SUV to see the wild things. A lion, enraged by poachers that killed its pride and has been roaming the countryside wreaking terrible vengeance on hapless humans, attacks and traps them in their SUV, where they are forced to endure family therapy.
Game Warden Friend ventures forth, rifle in hand, to kill the beast. He's severely mauled and loses his rifle but is left alive as bait. While the girls chatter hysterically, the lion returns, reaches through a window and in the ensuing panic one of the girls drives the SUV to the brink of an embankment but they are stopped by a pile of debris.
The engine dead, they are trapped. While the lion prowls around the area, Doctor Dad loads a tranquilizer rifle and sets out to subdue the beast. Meanwhile, one of the American teen age girls runs to find Game Warden Friend, and helps him hobble back to the SUV. When Doctor Dad returns, having been unsuccessful in putting the lion to sleep, he stitches the wound.
They drift off to sleep and poachers come hunting for the lion. When they see the injured ranger they draw down and prepare to shoot, but are attacked by the lion. As the poachers scatter, desperate to escape (the lion or the American teen age girls?), Doctor Dad braves the lion to get the keys for one of the poacher's trucks.
While Doctor Dad stumbles around the in dark, the lion lunges into the SUV through a broken window. Game Warden Friend sacrifices himself to save the wailing American teen age girls. Doctor Dad finds the keys to the truck, he and the girls drive to an abandoned church being used by the poachers. The lion slips in and resumes stalking them.
Doctor Dad lures the lion toward another pride, where the beast proceeds to maul him until he is saved by the other lions defending their territory. He wakes up in a hospital and, thanks to their ordeal the American teen age girls no longer hate Doctor Dad and ply him with platitudes.
Stereotypes exist for a reason: some are created to maliciously malign certain people, while others exist based on empirical evidence. Not all American teen age girls are prone to endless chatter and self-obsession, but in this age of narcissism, that stereotype exists for a reason.
Having endured countless hours of a handful of narcissistic women haranguing rational women and men with their self-obsessed chatter, I can think of few fates worse than having to endure the horror inflicted on Doctor Dad and Game Warden Friend.
The revenge-seeking lion was scary, too.
